Double Island Point

We recently had 2 wonderful weeks at Double Island Point lighthouse, where we have been volunteer caretakers for 19 years. We pull weeds and do cleaning and maintenance work in the mornings, usually having morning tea at the top of the headland where we often see humpback whales on their migration. The afternoons are free, which leaves time for art outside under the casuarina trees.

I completed 5 watercolours – Dingo 1, Egret 1, Goanna 1, Robin 2 and Snake 1 – that are part of my Habitats series: Heath, Shore, Wetlands and Woodlands.

Goannas lumber around the lawns at Double Island Point. This one was mobbed by magpies, crows and masked lapwings and scurried up a dead tree. The birds probably had nests nearby. The next day, we saw a bundle of downy feathers on the track and knew the goanna had found a meal.

Dingoes live in the Cooloola National Park as well as on K’gari. Many years ago, I saw some dingo pups rolling about on the grass very early one morning at Double Island Point.
