Lyn and Paul travelled through western Queensland during the Covid lockdowns in 2021. The Enormous Vastness series is inspired by the ancient beauty of the landscapes they saw. The series title is a line borrowed from Kev Carmody’s Droving Woman.

Inspired by ridiculous ads for 4WDs and ubiquitous vehicular tracks, many of Paul’s paintings feature a stylised 4WD as a modern-day Ned Kelly roaming the landscape, as hard, dangerous and inscrutable as Sidney Nolan’s outlaw. One of these was named a finalist in the 2023 Harden Art Prize.

Lyn says about her paintings: ‘For many Australians, the outback is somewhere they fly over on their way overseas. They might look down from an inflight movie and marvel at the vastness of the continent but they do not really see the ancient beauty below. They might not even realise they are flying over the area where Qantas was born. My painting En Route to Paris depicts the mulga and rocks on an escarpment in Welford National Park near Jundah, as well as the vastness stretching out to the north.’

A joint exhibition was held from 9–19 November 2023.
